I work as a strength and conditioning coach in a busy community gym, where I spend most weeks helping adults compare what their watches, cardio machines, and workout logs say about calorie burn. I have seen this become frustrating for smaller clients who compare their tracker totals with a larger training partner. A lighter person may finish the same class with a lower estimated calorie burn even while working at a demanding relative intensity. That does not mean the workout failed. Training quality cannot be reduced to which wrist display shows the biggest number.
That difference matters. I would rather see a person choose exercise that fits their goals and recovery capacity than repeatedly increase duration just to reach an arbitrary number. Someone training for strength may benefit from a 60-minute lifting session even if a continuous cardio workout displays a larger calorie estimate. The adaptation created by the workout is part of the reason I select an exercise, not merely the energy spent while doing it.
Intensity Has More Than One Meaning
I separate external intensity from personal intensity because they are easy to confuse. I once worked with a recreational lifter who became discouraged because his watch showed fewer calories during a carefully programmed strength workout than during an easy bike ride. His lifting session involved heavy compound exercises, controlled rest periods, and progressive loading over several months. I explained that the value of that session was tied to strength, skill, and muscle retention as much as immediate energy expenditure.
